The Garage Door Anthem

Opening image for the story
The air hung thick with the scent of paint thinner and the sweet, melancholic strains of Journey. Alex, paint-splattered and humming along, wielded a roller with the precision of a seasoned artist. His son, Hugo, a lanky 16-year-old with a permanent scowl etched on his face, was meticulously taping off the garage door, his headphones blasting something that sounded suspiciously like death metal. "You know, son," Alex said, his voice muffled by a paint mask, "this song would be perfect for your next emo phase." Hugo, without missing a beat, replied, "Dad, you're like, 50 years old. You don't get to talk about emo phases." Alex chuckled, "Hey, I was a teenager once too. Remember that time I dyed my hair purple and tried to learn the guitar?" Hugo rolled his eyes. "That was a different kind of 'emo,' Dad. More like 'embarrassing dad' emo." Alex laughed, "Touché, son. But you gotta admit, 'Don't Stop Believin'' is a classic. It's like the anthem of every dad who ever tried to be cool." Hugo, finally removing his headphones, looked at his dad with a hint of amusement. "You know, Dad, for a guy who listens to Journey, you're actually pretty funny." Alex grinned, "Thanks, son. I try." He paused, then added, "And hey, maybe you'll appreciate this song when you're my age. You'll be painting your own garage, listening to Journey, and your kids will be rolling their eyes at your 'classic' music." Hugo, a small smile playing on his lips, shook his head. "Yeah, right. I'll be blasting death metal and my kids will be listening to whatever the new 'emo' is." Alex chuckled, "Well, at least we can agree on one thing: music is the universal language of dads."
